Accidents and injuries Task1 Common accidents and injuries that occur to children and young people: 1. Falls from height (furniture, stairs, play equipment, slippery floors) which can led mostly to head injuries. 2. Burns and scalds ( sunburns, electrical, caused by lamps, matches, lighters, cigarettes, fireplaces, hot liquids) 3. Ingestion – poisoning ( from ingestion medicines, shampoo, cleaning products) 4. Ingestion – choking on food, toys, coins, bottle caps or other small objects. 5. Bites ( when children bite each other) 6. Cuts and scratches caused by sharp nails, animals, sharp objects or sharp edges of furniture. 7. Strangulation on necklaces, strings on clothes, baby headbands, ribbons, cord on toys. 8. Drowning which can occur in the bath, buckets, toilet and swimming pools. 9. Item struck in nostril or ear like pebbles, small stones, peas and other small objects. 10. Eye injuries caused by dust, sand, sprays. Task 2 These steps should always be followed when dealing with accident in childcare: 1. Assess the injury 2. Administer first aid 3. Decide if the child needs further treatment, and action that decision. 4. Decide if the accident falls under RIDDOR. 5. Record in the accident book. 6. Inform the parents. Task 3 These information’s should be included in every accident form: Child’s name and date of birth, date and time of accident, location where accident occurred, description of accident (first aid and treatment given, who administered by, parents contacted?), staff signature and date, parent signature and date. We need to consider if report need to be made under RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) if yes, we will also need to report to Ofsted.
