Week 4 Application Angelo Conformity: in 1854 this idea started with the efforts of English colonists to institute American values, norms, and standards perpetuated ever since. It is an extension of English culture and rejects diversity in favor of homogeneity and trends that everyone should conform to values, norms, and standards determined by the Anglo founders of the country and continuing by the white. This perspective towards diversity requires that immigrants stop speaking native languages and only use English as well as abandon their ethnic heritage. It is also referred to as Americanization. The people to benefit from this attitude towards diversity were the Northern European ethnic immigrants.
Nature and ancestor spirits are common in popular Taoism. Organized Taoism distinguishes its ritual activity from that of the folk religion, which some professional Taoists view as wrong. Confucianism is a Chinese ethical and philosophical system originally developed from the teachings of Confucius. Confucius was the founder of the teachings of Confucianism. Confucianism is a complex system of moral, social, political, philosophical, and religious thought which has had big influence on the culture and history of East Asia.
Burke opposed the instability and the reasoning of the revolution, as well as it’s potential to increase in violence and decline into anarchy, as it later did. Burkes opposition to the French revolution can also be inextricably linked to he’s insight that tradition should be prioritised over reason as he wrote ‘you possessed in some parts the walls and in all the foundations of a noble and venerable castle. You might have repaired those walls; you might have built on those old foundations… but
The intended audience could be future rulers or sons of those who are currently ruling and they want their descendants to be able to see how they came to their right of power. It’s almost as if it is rules regarding how a ruler is chosen, and/or what ruler’s roles are after they have been chosen. 3) The purpose of the text seems to be rules and regulations, but like the text says it was a way for the Zhou to overthrown the Shang. I also think it was to scare future rulers, because it mentions that the good-doer it sends blessing, whereas the evil-doer heaven sends down all miseries, and if the ruler results in poverty or miseries on their people, they can be overthrown. The source is a primary source, but it also says it is a collection of myths and recollected texts, and that being said when it says ‘myths’ I have doubts about this text.
Many became work oriented, getting married later on. The American viewpoint is closely tied to this concept, Americans have also pushed marriage back, in order to complete an advanced education, and climb the corporate ladder, many feel that marriage would hold them back from those accomplishments. Another change from the Renaissance, and arguably the most notable change, was humanism. This was not the form of humanism that many today are familiar with, but it was an educational stance based on greek and Roman literature. The new form of learning inspired many philosophers such as Isaac Newton and artist like Leonardo da
Mark Twain was and still is a literary idol for writers to always look up to, and the way he wrote he even became a political figure in America. To change his work without his permission, legal or not, is morally and ethically inappropriate. Carol Lucas said, “I think that if one is to edit Twain and omit what one might think is unacceptable, then one has to start in Shakespeare, the Roman and Greek comedies, most French and British comedies of the 18th and 19th centuries, and so on. Might as well rewrite all of history” (). Through this quote one can easily see how editing Twain’s masterpiece would be a queue for editors around the world to go and edit every inappropriate word of a dead writer’s work.
Shirky starts by revealing the case about how our new technology has enabled amateurs to make a large number of average grade information and products, lowering our levels of what is considered acceptable. Shirky then provides horrid predictions of the future caused by the collapse of culture. He adds that these fears are actually true and have been around for a long period of time, proving this claim through historical references of the Guttenberg’s press and the Protestant reformation. Shirky shifts to focus on the importance of the innovations that occur after: the new norms are increasingly made the “intellectual output” of society. In the article Shirky establishes the point that we are now going through a similar growth in our publishing capability as we had in our past.
The Confucianism was not the pure studies of Confucius, but a mixture of various other philosophies and superstitions to enhance the complex and inadequate teachings of Confucius. This changed the way that the empire was run. Before, emperors appointed people to positions regardless of their competence. Now, the emperors chose the people they thought were the best suited for the job based on merit. Written examinations were used to identify the best qualified people for the job.
Our country prides itself on encouraging its citizens to better themselves through education. (P) While its priority has been high school graduation, many jobs now require college degrees, making higher education more important than ever. While I understand that every American should be expected to sacrifice during this hard time, just as we were in World War II, I feel that this particular sacrifice would put our country in an even worse state. (S) Our work force will not be prepared to handle nor understand the advancements that we have strived so hard to achieve. College is made to prepare students with the newest information possible, so that we can constantly be improving ourselves and be able continue to compete with the world’s leading nations.
Creating Mythology that can be Understood Paul Elder (Doc) HCS/105 August 28 2014 David Hudson Creating Mythology that can be Understood Could one go on about the zodiac and find that there symbols could be the writings of their own mythology being. Chinese horoscope has given civilization a reading of what ancient beings have decided was our story, and as the modern world continues to believe these stories based on handed down or read stories could be the answer to our existence. According to its origin of the Hyan Dynasty, each animal and character live in its own created habitat. (Travel China, 2004) Does this create the basis of who we are and how we find ourselves in our own habitat, can we say that the zodiac has given us mythical stories of present day or are these stories recirculating.
