Learning To Keep Your Mouth Shut An Essay On Doing What Your Told To Do By: PFC Lynn The Army has certain ranks, structure, regulations, and customs and the Army expects that they are respected, and followed to standard. At the very lowest level are the E-1 to E-4 grades, which consist of PVT, PV2, PFC, and SPC. Theses ranks are not yet in charge as a NCO, so their responsibilities are to just follow orders and do what they are told to do. Every rank is charged to carry out orders given by their superiors. This is to be done immediately and without question or back talk. They are to follow every order unless it is unlawful according to regulations. It also violates the Army values. These values are an agreed upon way a soldier is supposed to act, as outlined in the Creed of Non-commissioned Officers, the Soldiers Creed, and the Army Values. In regard to the Army values, the soldier agreed to live by these values when they enlisted in the Army. These values are loyalty, duty, respect, selfless-service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. It violates duty, respect, honor, and integrity, by opening your mouth and questioning or complaining. Opening your mouth when it should remain closed, also shows a lack of mental discipline. A lack of mental discipline is usually caused by a lack of physical discipline. A weak body therefore a weak mind. The way our military handles the lack of respect and discipline shown is a lot easier then that of some other nations currently and throughout history. It would have resulted in death in some cultures. The following paragraphs will explain why, and give examples, as to what effect a subordinate back talking or disrespecting his superior, or the lawful order given, can bring about.
