Shukhov was very hard working man, taking pride in all the work that he did. He was a very disciplined man, “Shukhov never slept through reveille,” (Solzhenitsyn 1) this discipline allowed him to keep focused whilst doing his job. Some men were cleaners, builders, welders, and others were bricklayers: “Bricklaying a job you could take pride in,” (72) Shukhov also mentions “if your working for human beings, then do a real job of it, but if you work for dopes, then you just go through the motions.” (14) This means that if you are doing a meaningful job, like bricklaying you do a good job of it and you take pride in your finished product. However if you are doing a simple repetitive task , such as mopping the floor you just go through the motions and do not care for the finished product. The Gulag was a place where the convicted went, to live out their days of incarceration working.
(As well as his face tan, from the fire of welding, earning an honest living). In these first two stanzas the tones of romanticism are set by the use of a common man, such as a toiling blacksmith, compared to the toiling, straightforwardness of nature. In stanzas three and four, emphasis is put on how important his work is within the village society. The toiling blacksmith works “week in, week out,” to provide for the community, just as the toiling church bells do. Church bells have a repeating rhythm that occurs every day, regardless of the nature or tragedies that notify a community of the time.
Dick took pride in his work with passion and dedication. Not only did this assist him in earning more capital than other bootblacks, but also gave him a characteristic in the desire to erect his status in society. As stated, “Dick now began to look about for a position in a store or counting room. Until he should obtain one he determined to devote half the day to blacking boots, not being willing to break in upon his small capital.” (Alger, pg. 258 – Rereading America.)
Another reason is because of the way the quote was written, and I liked how the vocabulary was very descriptive. 9/2 Reactions to Characters Junior Renni is a small town thug and son of the most influential man in Chester's Mill. This makes me think that he is a very sinister man. After he is deputized, he recruits new
Jim had a Utopia dream, and in that dream he wanted an equal amount of labor. It didn’t matter to him whether the people were upper class or lower class; he wanted everyone in the same class. He made sure every single person had a job and they were to work whatever orders he gave them. This all leads to the idea that Utopia was communism. Jim Jones favored strict obedience at the expense of personal freedom.
The ability to read and write awoke something inside of him that gave him homemade education. Malcolm X was sensitive to the deafness, dumbness and blindness that were afflicting the black face in America. Books was Malcolm X life he said you never catch him without a book. Malcolm X was always studying something so he can help the next black man. Malcolm X spent the rest of his life reading books.
ngingAspects of Belonging: Self Respect and the belonging that comes through being skilled. 1. Outline his background as a metal smith. * Confidence : ‘his work was unsurpassed (high modality) in quality and speed’ Reflects his confidence in his skill and then flows onto his position. * ‘my father wasn’t merely skilled, he was a man of practical genius…’ use of adverb which conveys the attitude and emphasises just how skilled he really was.
Unit one also taught me to reevaluate how important certain priorities when it came to writing. I learned from the other unit one authors, Joseph M. Williams and James E. Porter, that when an essay is read by someone who is looking for grammatical error or plagiarism instead of content, they will often find the error and ignore the content. Although I do still know the importance of grammar and originality, this class and the grading style has let me put those constructs in the back seat until the editing process, instead of making them something I had to constantly worry about. I don’t believe that good writing revolves around grammar, but rather how well your words can convey a message to the intended audiences.
Titling the piece Digging immediately highlights for the reader the verbal connotation of the work, and puts the theme of work, and of manual labor into the limelight. As well, Heaneys use of the word gun to describe his “squat pen” in line 2 places the emphasis on machinery allowing a comparison of the human condition to present technology. This theme continues throughout the poem, as Heaney likens his fathers act of digging to that of a machine, “as his father nestled on the lug, the shaft/Against the inside knee was levered
Chris loved books and found company in the characters in the books he loved, his favored author was Jack London who also hoboed around the country and returned to school at the age of 19. Mr. London became a writer because he wanted to escape from the horrific prospects of life as a factory worker, just like Chris who doesn’t like the
