Determining the Perfect Position Shirley Cieremans LDR/531 February 4, 2013 Dr. Michael Gottleib Determining the Perfect Position Leadership is the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or set of goals (Robbins & Judge, 2011). Leaders must provide direction, motivation, and goals to lead employees to be successful. This paper is to create a position that best suits me by defining my role that most benefits the company to be most successful. The company I work for is expanding and restructuring. A democratic/participative leadership style is one of the most effective styles that leads to higher productivity, better contributions from group members, and increased group morale (Cherry, 2013). As a democratic/participative leader, good communication skills are a must. Leaders must communicate with employees by encouraging and involving them with the opportunity to share ideas, opinions, and suggestions. Giving them the opportunity of sharing the ideas, opinions, and suggestions will show how well the employees skills are and how it will affect the district. The democratic/participative leaders must communicate with its employees by taking his or her ideas, opinions, and suggestions in making the final decision. As the leader, I must recognize the skills and expertise of the group and use them when needed. The leader will take all ideas and suggestions and make the final decision. Communicating the final decision will be difficult to team members if his or her ideas or suggestions were not selected in the final decision. Team members will respect the final decision. Weaknesses The biggest weakness of democratic leadership is poor communication that leads to the incompletion of the goal. Sometimes team members may not have the necessary skills or knowledge for the decision making process. The democratic leader will need to be aware of the team member’s skills and knowledge to determine if he or she is right for the team. Leadership Theories Leadership theories involve trait-based, situational, and transformational leadership. Trait-based theories are not learned but rather born with the characteristics of an effective leader. Trait-based theories cannot be developed or changed. Identifying personality and behaviors are features of trait-based leadership theories but these traits are often learned.
