On April 16, 2007, a senior at Virginia Tech named Seung-Hui Cho shot and killed 32 people and wounded 17 others on the campus before committing suicide. On July 20, 2012, a mass shooting occurred inside a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado during a screening of The Dark Knight Rises. 12 people were killed and 58 others were injured. Most recently, on December 14, 2012, a man named Adam Lanza shot 20 children and six staff members at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. These are only a few of the mass shootings that have occurred recently in the past and have sparked debate about the controversial topic of gun control.

According to the article, Fire Away, in one year, there are 31,224 people die from gun violence, 12,632 people are murdered, 683 children and teens kill themselves and 17,352 people kill themselves (Grunwald 36). Total death about gun violence is 61208 which mean one person dies in every five thousand in the United States. In one day, 8 children and teens die from gun violence, 86 people die from gun violence, and 35 people are murdered (Grunwald 36). In an industry figures shows about gun homicides, there was about six thousand in 1966. Compare twenty-nine years late which was 1995, it was increased to be 15835 gun homicides which is about 86 percent ascent (Jost 1108).

Why gun control won’t stop crime After the tragedy in Newton CT, where twenty-six innocent people lost their lives gun control seems to be a hot topic again. The ideas of certain types of gun control have been all over the news and radio talk shows ever since the tragedy. But it’s my belief that gun control is not the answer to violent crime, and in my opinion gun control doesn’t make us safer, it just makes law-abiding citizens an easier target for crime. Many opponents for stricter gun control laws have stated it will cut down on violent crime, or mass shootings such as the one in Newtown. Politicians have stated thy will introduce new laws wanting tougher background checks, forced registration, and outright banning of military looking firearms.
