The Role of Law in Society and Business LAW/421 September 22, 2014 The Role of Law in Society and Business Abraham Lincoln said, “Law is nothing else but the best reason of wise men applied for ages to the transactions and business of mankind" (Norton, 1996). Leaders before Abraham Lincoln established the best reasoning for American law, the Constitution of the United States. The law guides individuals and business commerce by “promoting good faith dealing among merchants and consumers and giving some degree of reliability that can be considered in business planning and commercial transactions” (Melvin, 2001). The Red Cross supplies about 40% of the nation’s blood supply and provides blood for patients in approximately 2,700 hospitals across the United States ("Blood Facts and Statistics", 2014). In providing life-saving products, abiding by lawful regulations regarding the handling of blood is strictly for the safety of the public to avoid transfusing disease as in the 2008 case of a blood transfusion that resulted in a patient contracting HIV ("HIV Transmission Through Transfusion --- Missouri And Colorado, 2008", 2010). The Red Cross strives for excellence in quality and control but this was questioned in the early 1990’s. “After years of quiet complaints about the Red Cross’s blood business, the F.D.A. reluctantly decided to go public with its concerns in 1993, obtaining a consent decree that required the Red Cross to strengthen quality control and training and improve its ability to identify, investigate and record problems” (Strom, 2008). Since the initiation of the consent decree, the Red Cross has been fined over $30 million for unsafe practices in its blood operations. The Red Cross is still currently under the consent decree and works to improve excellence. I can attest to the hard work individuals do each and every day to avoid violations and stay in compliance with all regulations. Since people are human, mistakes will continue to be made but guidelines outlined and the enforcement by pricey fines and sometimes loss of employment help to ensure the quality and safety of all Red Cross products.
