Lasers in Dentistry

Recently, leasers’ procedures play a major role in health care. A verity of laser procedures have be identified and used for different purposes. Dental laser is one of many laser type but it is specifically used in dentistry and oral surgery. Dental laser is an effective method to preform as much dental procedures. The aim is to improve treatment with highly specific area of focus without damaging surrounding tissues.

Lasers have been used in dentistry since 1994. In general laser work by transporting energy in the form of light. When used for surgical and dental procedures, the laser acts as a cutting instrument or a vaporizer of tissue that it comes in contact with. When used for curing or filling, the laser helps to strengthen the bond between the filling and the tooth. When used in teeth-whitening procedures, the laser acts as a heat source and enhances the effect of tooth-bleaching agents.

There are some pros and cons of using laser in dentistry. Pros can include: less pain in most cases, no need for anesthesia, reduce anxiety, minimize bleeding and swelling as well as no sutures in soft tissues treatment, faster healing and tissue regeneration, damage to surrounding tissue is reduces and it decrease bacterial infection. On the other hand, cons of dental laser are; more expensive (ranging from $ 5,000 to $ 50,000), it cannot be used in fillings already teeth or some commonly dental procedures and traditionally drills may still be needed even if laser is used.

Laser application in dentistry made it easy for dentists to preform a wide range of procedures they were not capable to preform in the past. Laser procedures have become an accurate technology into common and less used procedures. Laser procedures can be classified into three categories: hard tissues, soft tissues and other applications.
