I awoke to the sound of Frank Ocean’s melodic voice blasting through the speakers of my iPod alarm clock. Even the intoxicating sound of my favorite artist wasn’t enough to remind that today was Monday. I threw my pillows at the headboard of my bed, wiped the crust from my eyes and trudged towards the shower. The soothing smell of oranges from the body wash wasn’t enough to revive me. Everything I did felt so normal; it made me feel like an average high school student. I only felt that way until I looked at myself in the mirror and saw the 7 inch scar plastered vertically along the center of my chest. It was this horrid scar, appeared to have been drawn by six year child, that served as a reminder that I was far from normal. My quotidian routine involved consuming an incessant amount of prescription pills each and every morning to stabilize my heart. I didn’t mind sitting by myself. It gave me an opportunity to sit by the window and look out at Lake Nona’s breathtaking scenery. The view of majestic palm trees planted neatly along the roads transitioned into a sight of restaurants, grocery stores, and gas stations. Even at the crack of dawn, the streets were brimming with cars and there was a bustling amount of people inside McDonalds. I missed the sweet aroma of French fries from McDonalds and longed to hear the sound of the fries being dropped in the sizzling oil. The only thing hindering me from living the life of a normal student was my Arrhythmia. It had gone undiagnosed until my fateful experience at the soccer field. My heart condition was the only thing holding me back from living life to the fullest. Eating fast food would be unhealthy and cause complications, but what was even worse was my love for the game of soccer was forced to end because extraneous activities could trigger a heart
