Assignment 3.1: Determining Causes and Effects Lake Huron is one of the well-known five Great Lakes located on the west side of Michigan. It was created when glaciers melted during the last ice age, making it a fresh water lake. Lake Huron has the largest shore line than any of the other great lakes making it home to many locals. With all the Great Lakes Combined there are 1.5 million jobs tied to them with 200,000 jobs supported by recreation and tourism. (Natural Resources Defense Council, n.d) Many tourist will come to the Great Lakes for sport fishing, boating, and swimming. Air deposition is more hazardous to the open- water, middle of the lake, which is dropping pesticides, lead, mercury, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBS), furans, dioxins, and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT). (Sivers, A, n.d) DDT is a white crystalline in-soluble solid usually derived from choral. (Dictionary.com, n.d) PCBS is any of a family of very stable industrial compounds used as lubricants, heat-transfer fluids, and plasticizers, which has banned since the 1970 for the harm it causes to the environment. (Dictionary.com, n.d) Even though DDT is banned in the United States and Canada it is still showing up in the Great Lakes. The air quality on the shoreline of Lake Huron is the worst in the south Ontario area. (Sivers, A, n.d) Sediment loading is known to high levels of deferred solids being washed into creeks and rivers and carried down into the lake. (Sivers, A, n.d) Sediment loading can also be caused by dredging which can cause a decrease in food source for the aquatic life. With having foreign vessels follow in and out of the lake from the Atlantic is also causing problems. With the vessels having foreign aquatic life attached to the bottom of the ship and also leaking fluids into the lake while passing through. The whole committee and the government needs to get involved with trying to solve the problems. Having a set action plan for helping the solution. Having penalties for those who do not follow the rules to stop the pollution to the lake. Learning new methods to the help set problems straight. Getting involved with the other parts of the Great Lakes to make sure they do not go through the same problems.
