The tone that the author set was complication and romance. Mia’s relationship with Simon was romantic and made you feel as if you were Simons girlfriend, however when it comes to Mia’s family everything is just a blur. The mood set in this novel was a happy and suspenseful mood once I got right into the book I could not put it down because the suspense was building up so high. In this perfectly crafted summer book, Mia Gordon finds herself looking to run away from love and lose herself in the sea off of Long Island.
The Story of Ceyx and Alcyone is one of beauty and tragedy. Ceyx was the king in Thessaly and son of Lucifer, and Ceyx’s wife, Alcyone was the daughter of Aeolus, the King of the Winds. The two loved each other devotedly and were seldom apart. Nevertheless, a time came when Ceyx decided he needed to leave his wife and make a long journey across the sea. Alcyone hysterically sobbed and stressed to her husband to not leave, out of fear that her beloved would never return.
charlotte was confused as to why she shouldn't be on this ship Mr.grammage said she had to be on this ship and that her father had left no money for another voyage .we charlotte first got onto the ship she was warned by many people that she shouldn’t be on this ship she was confused because when she first went to go meet the captain at his mesmerizing cabin ,a well dressed man with impeccable manners, he reminded her of her well rounded father there both spit and polished people with great knowledge . but what she didn’t know was one day she will figure out behind that person she will soon find out his true colors. at the beginning of the book that captain was her friend and so was zachariah the cook . the captain asked her to be his eyes and ear she was confused but did so , she didn’t know because later on the crew is rebelling against the captain since she was afraid she went and told the captain . he immediately stopped the rebellious act and punished zachariah for it, charlotte thought zachariah died so she got upset and wanted to help the crew she said “ i’ve come to become one of the crew” ( pg 106 )but the crew was furious that after what she did she wanted to help them and for a while both the captain and crew were angry at her but she kept demanding that she wanted to be part of the crew so they let her in .

The idea of gender role expectations is important in the incident when Kahu retrieves the carved whale tooth because Koro’s reaction, when Nanny Flower shows the stone to him affirms the idea that Koro does not expect any girl to retrieve it. I couldn’t help but compare this story to real life situations after reading each scene because this continues to occur till this day. Guy does an amazing job illustrating reality into words forming a story out of it. While at the party, Mathilde attracts all the attention because of her appearance, however, the few hours of admiration and joy she encounters will all come to an end. What the people don’t see is the truth underneath the surface of her appearance of who she really is.
