Comparative Essay Hassan’s will to do virtually anything for Amir highlight the imbalance of loyalty in their friendship. Hassan’s constant acts of kindness show us that Hassan is very loyal to Amir but Amir is very selfish. Hassan will do anything Amir asks him to do, “For you a thousand times over” (p.71, Hosseini). This quote is right after the kite running tournament, Amir asks Hassan to run the kite for him. It tells us that Hassan would do anything for Amir, using the word “a thousand” rather than just saying “for you”.
One experience is with Boo Radley who was the mysterious man who never leaved his house, and they always thought he was evil and they were all afraid of him, but then he saved them from being attacked but during the attack Jem was knocked out could so he never saw who saved them but Scout did. That is when she knew that they were wrong that Boo Radley didn’t stay in his house because he is evil but stayed in because the world was evil and he did not want to be a part of it. Jem was also exposed to a life changing event and that is the Tom Robinson trail. In the trail he learns how mean a race can be to another race, to Jem after Atticus presented the evidence to the Jury it seemed like Tom would have won for sure but he didn’t really know about the racism that happens and was shocked when he was proven guilty. Both the children went through a hard childhood with discrimination a big part of their life’s and just a regular day could have had a life altering change.
Colby's friends had been warning him for some time that they did not like the way Colby had been behaving. But after Colby did something, his friends decided that he should be hanged. They tried to rationalize their decision by saying that they, ".... had a perfect moral right to do so because he was our friend, belonged to us in various important senses, and he had after all gone too far." (Barthelme, 1973, pg. 194) His friends would not listen to Colby's argument that, "Going too far was something everybody did sometimes."
He was also very jealous, which I strongly believe led to him not helping Hassan. As the story unfolded, I noticed that Babba was more interested in Hassan. Amir wanted to be in Hassan’s spot. Amir doesn’t realize the true meaning of life until later on in the story. From not helping Hassan the night of the rape, led to extreme guilt.
This clearly shows an example of how destructive shame can be on someone’s life. Some people can overcome shame and redeem them selves but to other people it can destroy their whole life. Another character form the book that experiences the tragedy of shame is Baba. Thru out the book it is revealed to us that Hassan is also Baba’s son. Baba feels ashamed of being Hassan’s father because he kept it a secret to everyone for all this time.
In the beginning of the story, Brother recounts the day Doodle was born, saying that he was a disappointment as soon as he entered the world. The narrator was not satisfied with his brother, which resulted in the horrible things he thought about him. Brother said that “It was bad enough having an invalid brother, but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable…” As a result, the narrator enjoyed torturing Doodle, threatening to abandon him multiple times. He even took Doodle to see the casket that was built for him, and forced him to touch it. The narrator basked in the control he had over his brother.
Amir wants to win the kite tournament, and surely he does. Amir is very happy he was victorious and this is an excellent time in his life that is filled with joy and happiness. But later in the book gears start to turn as there is a turn of events. Amir goes to Afghanistan once Hassan, Amir’s child hood friend, gets killed by the Taliban 40 years later, to pick up a boy named Sohrab. While going to pick up the boy he meets a man, who has the boy, whose name is Assef, Amir’s nemesis.
One of Huck Finn’s major lies, is the one that set the stage for this story of adventure. After living with Ms. Watson, he goes on and lives with his dad but does not like the way he is treated, so he decides to run away. He doesn’t want to be “sivilized” and he does not want to hit by his “Pap.”Huck creates a plan that will lead people to believe that he is dead so if he runs away no one would suspect that and won’t look for him and sure enough. According to everyone he had been killed either by Jim or by his dad.
Amir would rather his father love him and be proud of him for one day than help his best friend from getting raped. Amir was selfish and unappreciative. After Hassan got raped, the relationship between him and Amir changed for the worst. Amir did another terrible thing by framming Hassan. This was the last time Amir saw Hassan because after Hassan and his father left, Amir and Baba moved to America.
“Yes, Father,” Hassan would mumble, looking down at his feet. But he never told on me. Never told that the mirror, like shooting walnuts at the neighbor’s dog, was always my idea. Hassan always took blame when they caught up. He even didn’t tell on Amir.
