kite runner “The Kite Runner Essay” By Jorge Navarrete Amir is an example of a character that shame affected his life in a negative way. One of the things that he does to be ashamed of was that when his friend needs his help, he chooses to be self-fish and he keeps quiet. He doesn’t help because he is afraid that he is going to get hurt. This is demonstrated when he says “In the end, I ran”(77). He decides that it is easer to run away from his problems rather than to face them. This event determines who he is going to be, and he chooses to be a coward even though he has the opportunity to stand up for his friend. This happens when he tells himself “One final opportunity to decide who I was going to be” (77). This changes the friendship between Amir and Hassan for ever. Another example of what he does to be ashamed is that he hides some money and a new his new watch under Hassan’s mattress. We know he hides the items under the mattress when he says “I lifted Hassan’s mattress and planted my new watch and a handful of Afghani bills under it”(104). He feels ashamed for doing this because Baba asks Hassan if he steels the watch and the money, Hassan says that he did steel them. Over the course of the book Amir’s shame drives him to do crazy things to try and be forgiven. This clearly shows an example of how destructive shame can be on someone’s life. Some people can overcome shame and redeem them selves but to other people it can destroy their whole life. Another character form the book that experiences the tragedy of shame is Baba. Thru out the book it is revealed to us that Hassan is also Baba’s son. Baba feels ashamed of being Hassan’s father because he kept it a secret to everyone for all this time. He is ashamed of being Hassan’s dad because if people know that he made love with a hassara his reputation will be destroyed, and his reputation is
