“Killing in the Name”, is a documentary directed by Jed Rothstein, that focuses around a Jordanian Muslim named Ashraf Al-Khaled and his encounter with terrorism. On what was expected to be one of the happiest days of his life, he experienced a terrible tragedy. During his wedding ceremony, a suicide bomber walked in, and blew himself up, as well as 27 members of Al-Khaled and his wife’s family and friends. This event caused Al-Khaled to seek awareness towards the driving forces behind terrorism, and expose its true costs. The documentary shifts its focus on a “jihadi” recruiter, to other victims of terrorism, to an Islamic militant, to an educational institute full of young boys waiting to take their chances of fulfilling the “jihad”. This documentary essentially shows Al-Khaled’s journey around the world to find someone that is willing to speak the honest truth about terrorism, and put an end to terror violence everywhere. In “Killing in the Name”, violence is very prevalent, and ultimately stems from something known as a “jihad”. A jihad is defined in the context of this film as being a holy war undertaken as a sacred duty by Muslims. In other words, because of the jihad terrorists feel that they are enabled to kill in the name of Allah, and that is their stance. Considering the fact that in many cases a jihad is caused because of a clash between followers of different religions, each of whom believes that God is on their side and that the other side is of Satan, Al-Khaled does not understand why these terror organizations are killing so many Muslims in the name of God. In the documentary, we met a recruiter for Al-Qaeda named Zaid, who is tied to the suicide bombing that happened at Al-Khaled’s wedding.
