Keeping an Open-Mind Allows for Growth. | A short essay exploring an open-mind vs. a closed-mind and how an open-mind allows for growth. | | Colleen Guthrie | 5/24/2011 | English 12 | Keeping an Open-Mind Allows for Growth An individual who keeps an open-mind allows room for growth; while “A closed-mind is like a closed book; just a block of wood”. I’m certain each one of us has had at least one acquaintance that is closed-minded. You know the sort, unreceptive, argumentive, know -it –all. No matter what the topic, they know best. They are usually the ones we can hardly bear to be around. It goes without saying then, that being around a closed-minded person can be very challenging to say the least. How many times can you recall ending up in countless arguments with a closed-minded acquaintance? They are often the most stubborn of people. Good luck trying to broaden their horizons or to see your point of view. On the other hand open-minded people are approachable, receptive and generally easier to get along with. The kind of people that is easy to be around. They will hear out the opinions of others, and will listen to other points of view. The saying “The teacher arrives when the student is ready” truly does apply to those with an open mind. When we keep an open-mind we leave ourselves open to hear and see opportunities for growth. Open-minded people will “stretch” and therefore allow happiness and growth. If an idea can be shown to be correct, then an open-minded person is likely to alter their view and accept it as new found knowledge. Keeping an open-mind undeniably allows for growth; it is the only course to personal growth. It is through an open-mind that we open ourselves up to “stretch” and grow. Having taken time to explore both ways of thinking, the choice seems astonishingly clear. I cannot imagine living a life devoid of
