The development of a nationwide revival mainly centered at his church was only an image of God moving among his people at will. Jonathan Edwards would never claim the responsibility for the hundreds of people converted at his church or the thousands converted across the country following the two years of revival in Northampton. After it subsided, he spent many hours writing and exploring the mechanics of the conversion process. Biography Jonathan Edwards was a preacher’s kid of the extreme. He had eight sisters and no brothers. In his writings you will find that he loved his parents and had a special relationship with his Mother. He was born in the parsonage in Windsor, Connecticut. His Mother’s father was the extremely powerful and well-respected Solomon Stoddard (also a preacher).5 As any Old Testament scholar would know the name”Jonathan” means “Gift of Jehovah” in Hebrew. He was their only son and studied at the knee of his father. He proved to be very intelligent and began to explore and develop his ideas in what would become theology, philosophy and science with vigor at an early age.
