Amazon Corporate Social Responsibility JJT2 Task 1 Amazon was founded in Seattle, Washington in 1995 (originally “Cadabra” in 1994) by Jeff Bezos. Amazon began as an online book store. Within its first two months, Amazon had sales in all 50 states and 45 countries, and sales were over $20,000/week (Spiro, 2009). Amazon has since become the largest online retailer and sells virtually everything from books to sporting goods equipment and clothes. Amazon has only recently begun to implement corporate social responsibility (CSR) plans into its overall business strategy. Despite this, Amazon continues to be among the highest rated companies by consumers (Vozza, 2014). This is solely due to Amazon's customer-focused business style and reliability. However, Amazon and founder Bezos have recently been criticized for lacking an environmental component to their business plan. Prior to this, Amazon critics targeted Bezos for not disclosing and encouraging charitable donations. Amazon has a solid foundation for CSR, but there is always room for improvement. My recommendations will fall into three categories: Environmental, Community, and Organization. A1. Environment. Amazon has been relentlessly criticized for lacking an environmentally focused CSR strategy. Amazon continually receives low ratings by GreenPeace and Climate Counts, and Amazon does not participate in the Carbon Disclosure Project (Gunther, 2012). Most of this is meaningless and completely lacks substance. Amazon, like most large companies, is largely unappreciated for the little things that have a large impact. For instance, the whaling industry, which was peaking during the Industrial Revolution, was not shut down by legislation, awareness campaigns by environmentalists, or social perception of its evils.
