Italian Multiculturalism in Australia Multiculturalism – (Multicultural) relating to or containing several cultural or ethnic groups within a society. (Oxford Dictionary) I believe multiculturalism is the maintenance of a community in which any human being, no matter what nationality, race, religion and/or culture, can live. It is living together in a state or nation whist united with one another. Today it is not unusual to see people of all different races, ethnic backgrounds or cultural groups living in one society. Our society is formed of a mix of different people. ‘Multiculturalism is not only a successful policy - it’s a great way of life, and importantly, an asset’ - Premier Barry O’Farrell Examples of Italian Multiculturalism in Australia Italian Australians are one (uno) of the largest cultures within Australian borders. There are examples of Italian Multiculturalism everywhere we look due to the Italian population growing in Australia. According to the 2006 census, 1,051,541 people stated that they were born (nato) in Italy or had Italian ancestry. Italian Cuisine is a definite favourite when it comes to the food (cibo) we enjoy in Australia. Pizza, gelato and coffee are just some of the much enjoyed foods and drinks that we love. Language is another example of multiculturalism. Language influences culture, so learning a language helps us to understand how other people think, and it also helps us to get a general understanding of our world and the many people and cultures in it. Clothing is, with no doubt, a way to express yourself and your culture. The reason we wear clothes (vestiti) is to show our individuality and express who we are. In saying that, dressing as a culture is another way that we express who we are, as well as where we are from.
