Teams comprised of mixed ethnicities, backgrounds and gender are likely to be more creative than single cultural teams (Caron, 2007). Clients prefer to be served by a company workforce with whom they can identify so customers will also benefit from the training (Caron, 2007). Training employees to be cross-cultural competent will facilitate positive customer relations. Cross-cultural training focuses on helping people learn to manage themselves in other countries or as a minority in majority cultural group. It focuses on multicultural differences and educating people to understand cultural differences (DTUI, 2004).
In the service sectors, the cost saving from offshoring enables companies to create new service lines, many of which had been deferred for want of investment. New services increase customer satisfaction and become new revenue streams, as well as growth paths for companies. The geographic nature of offshoring brings its own advantages. It helps the company expand its reach, thereby helping the company grow. This growth mitigates any negative effects of offshoring.
Another advantage of workplace diversity is the opportunity for employees' personal growth. Diversity is important because it provides our society and culture with unique and inspiring perspectives of different lifestyles. Diversity creates new ideas and changes that are beneficial to our societies. If we all looked the same, smelled the same, dressed the same, our lives would be boring and there wouldn’t be any excitement from that. With diversity we get to look at other cultures lifestyles and use that as a basis to grow as a nation and better ourselves. Comparing ourselves to others is a good thing.
How does society confer our individuality upon us? “Expressions of individuality are ultimately beneficial to society since they contribute to the well-being of humankind” (Souffrant, 2000, pp. 32). There are many ways in which individuals express their individuality in modern societies, however it is important to understand how this differs from pre-industrial societies to acknowledge the change in individualism and the impact society has. It is argued that there are multiple ways in which society and its institutions confer our individuality upon us.
