Diversity Quote What is Diversity? Diversity is about being different or unlike someone else, it’s about acknowledging, valuing and respecting differences in individuals. Valuing diversity aims to meet the requirements of the various people and some of these differences can be because of: ▪ Appearance ▪ Social class\Family structure ▪ Religion\values and beliefs ▪ Place of origin ▪ Culture ▪ Age\Health status ▪ Race\Ethnicity ▪ Disability\learning needs ▪ Gender ▪ Sexuality Overview of Diversity Ethnicity In 2001 for the first time in the census questionnaire it was included a question that asked to identify which ethnic group they belonged to, and from the 2001 census to the 2011 census this duplicated, by which English was not the main language for more than 54,500 of the residents aged three and over. Fact: The most prevalent main language other than English is Polish. (2011 census) Main Benefits of Ethnicity Having a range of people from different cultures can enrich social integration and cohesion (Social Capital Theory E. Crains, 2006). It can also be benefited from economic productivity e.g. skills more expertise\talents. However this can only be achieved if people accept diversity and the benefits that come with it, as the contrary may provoke conflicts and social division. Social\ Cultural Benefits of Diversity Valuing diversity can be very enriching and creative as accepting diversity may result in a greater range of social skills like learning about different cultures, as these offer new experiences such as different foods and places to visit. Being able to acknowledge other people’s life experiences may help us to befall our view on our own lifestyle and may help us to cope with change.
