Islam vs. The West Anatomy of Jihad It seems that not a day goes by in which the Western world is not bombarded by pictures and video from the Muslim world showing anti-American and anti-Western protests. All too often, these scenes depict gun wielding men and boys, denouncing the West for one form of violation of Islamic Laws or another. Add to those scenes, scenes from the 9/11 attacks on the US, along with a multitude of terrorist attacks, and the world’s view of Islam is one of a bunch of violent religious zealots, bent upon bringing about the downfall of Western civilization at all costs. But is this violence really the nature of Islam, or has the world misjudged the nature of the conflict, and jumped to a conclusion that serves only to incite violence. Islam is a religion that has many common links to Christianity. Like Christianity, the Muslim believes in one true God, Allah. The teaching of Islam is divided into two parts, the “Tawhid” which describes what a man should believe, and the “Shari'a,” which describes what a man should do. These teachings are contained in the Qur'an, which Muslims believe is the word of Allah, spoken to the prophet Mohammed through the angel Gabriel. As it is believed to be the words of Allah, it is considered infallible and without error. The Qur’an is 114 chapters long, There are several other documents that are included in the practice of Islam, some of which are the “Torat,” of Moses, the “Zabur” (Psalms of David) and the “Injil” (gospel of Jesus). While these books are a part of the teachings of Islam, they are not considered the true word of God, since they have been corrupted through the years (Wenner, 2001).
