Is the Inner Living Nature Poorly Covered Up by Society?

Each person in the novel “Lord of the flies” has an evil living nature which is poorly covered up by society. Throughout, the novel, the audience is shown that if society is taken away from civilisation the inner nature of chaos and lawlessness comes out. Golding uses the boys as a way of demonstrating how people can change when time goes on without rules. The boys then change so much that it leads to the death of two young boys. The evil is revealed as they discover that when total control is given to someone destruction occurs within the group. The themes that are presented in the novel regarding society and human nature is not far from different to reality. The boys start to become more violent and learn that they need to do what is essential to get what they want, no matter how much they are risking or sacrificing. This can be related to human nature as many people lose control of their actions and become violent. Jack’s group are blinded by savagery which makes them lose control of what they are doing. For an example when the hunting group steal other people’s belongings this shows the lack of morality in them. When the boys raided Ralph’s camp “they took the fire” which is technically piggy’s glasses. Stealing the glasses allows Jack to create fire for their camp and only his. Jack also put the entire group in danger by setting fire which “reached the coco-nut palms by the beach and swallowed them noisily.” When many of the members left Ralph’s group to join Jack’s, Ralph can see how, “these painted savages would go further and further” to do what they need to do. They brutally kill many animals to survive and never give up on hunting. Likewise, we are shown how Roger pushes the “rock that struck piggy which blew the conch into a thousand pieces.” This lead to the death of piggy because of Roger and Jack’s ruthless and uncontrollable actions.
