Running Head: Peter L. Berger Peter L. Berger: Invitation to Society Nicole Sheldon Monroe Community College Peter L Berger’s, Invitation to Society appeared most appealing to me for this topic discussion because he helps to explain why sociologist do the things they do and see things the way they see them. It is not always clear as to why certain professionals go about their jobs the way they do. Sociology is assumably one of the most confusing of the professional world. Police Officers uncontestably drive around the cities searching for “rules” or “laws” in which people are breaking; while teachers are filling kids and young adults with knowledge to help them in society. Sociology on the other hand is not so thoroughly understood. Peter L Berger conceivably takes you on a walk in the day in the life of a sociologist. Berger refers to sociologist as “Professional peeping Toms” (Berger, 1963, p.1). By this he means that at all times sociologist are being your nosey neighbor or that nosey person driving the car who slows down to almost a dead stop to find out why there are police cars and fire trucks at the scene of an accident. His description of the study of sociology reminds me of the mother of your best friend in high school who knew everyone’s business and had more of the “scoop” when you got home from school than any of the kids actually attending the school. He explains that at all times of the day or night a sociologist is constantly looking for some type of drama to stir up so they can learn and ask questions about why the drama occurred and what each individual’s reaction was to it. He explains that if there is ever a closed door with “men” voices behind it a successful sociologist is looking for any reason to go into the room and observe the interactions in that particular environment (Berger, 1963, p.2).
