Men and women across the United States risk their lives to ensure that people they know and do not know remain safe. The police and their place in government is a vital key in society. Our modern day law enforcement has continued to change as the demand for more peace rises. Some principles that serve as a traditional model for police forces today are public the accessible headquarters, having a central location and using crime rates to determine the effectiveness of policing. Law enforcement in America began to utilize and implement ideas in order to establish a much better rapport with the American citizens. One of their first means was that of adding professionalism to law enforcement. In doing so, they created new state police organizations because of many corruptive one that were misleading, dishonorable, and not a “fan” for the citizens they were supposed to be protecting. Because of this vast change, police really sought out to change the personified image of law enforcement as a collective whole (Lentz & Chaires, 2007). They really began to take on the needs of American citizens beyond just maintaining and conducting law, but now they were assisting in many areas of housing, built and supervised playgrounds for children, and even found jobs for ex-convicts. “Police administrators should acknowledge that crime is a natural condition of society, not a problem to be solved, so that neither, their personnel, their political leaders, nor the public will be deluded into unrealistic expectations by new programs (Grant & Terry,2008 p.1).” Law enforcement has come such a long way, and has made unimaginable strides in the process. Technology has certainly advanced and so have people who commit crimes. Crime will always exist, as long as there are people in society. Law enforcement can only attempt to manage these crimes and deal with them accordingly.
