Invasive Species Paper: Coyote & Red Oak Invasive Species are defined as an animal or plant that is not native to the area. Many of these invasive species can be harmful to the native organisms or cause damage to our environment. Most species were brought here from different places in the world by accident or to get rid of another species. Since we have discovered that they are unhealthy to our ecosystem, there has been a huge effort by the state to remove invasive species. For my project I decided to research about Coyotes and Red Oaks in Maryland and how they have impacted our community. Coyotes or Canis Latrans are in the canine or canidae family, they resemble smaller German Shepherd Dogs. The average adult weighs in between…show more content…
In the last decade the Red Fox population has drastically decreased due the Coyote’s migration East. Coyotes and Red Foxes share similar habitat and diet types. Coyotes are nearly double the size of Red Foxes and have a much more aggressive nature so the competition for prey is not much of a competition. Coyote’s impact on most critters can be predicted easily, expect the White Tail Deer population. Ecologist have yet to anticipate the long-term effect of Coyotes to White Tail Deer. Even though the Coyotes have affect native species, they have also wreaked havoc on the livestock and local animals part of Maryland. Pets make easy prey for Coyotes in the suburbs. They’re known to prey on domesticated dogs and cats, since their introduction to the Eastern Shore the feral cat’s population has dwindled rapidly. The other culturally representation is their mark on livestock. In my interview with Mr.Bankhead he informed me of the impact Coyote’s have made to his head, for him they’re a major issue just like many other farmers on the Eastern Shore. For research I pinpointed all location where Coyotes have been documented in Kent County, there have been twenty-seven different sightings within the last couple years. The only management the State of Maryland has been able to legislate is hunting and trapping seasons. My other Invasive Species I chose was the Red Oak tree or Quercus Rubra in latin. The Red Oak is a rapid growing and durable tree that is native to northeastern American and Southeast Canada. Red Oak can grow up to twelve inches per year, which is relatively fast for trees. They serve as sturdy shelter for many smaller animals. Red Oaks bare large, broad acorns which are sharp at one end. They have tiny small green globules that hang in clusters. Their bark is a deep reddish brown that is hard with rounded edges. Red Oaks are one of the most common oaks used in timber production.
