What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field — such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities — and what you have gained from your involvement. My new life started six and a half years ago when I first stepped into the United States, a country of immense opportunities. My intended major is chemistry, which is a subject I’ve had a lot of interest in since the 7th grade when I first studied Chemistry in the Punjabi language for a year. According to Professor Romer, a way to improve one’s skills in the chemistry lab is to practice cooking. In any recipe, one needs to follow certain procedures. If one does not follow the instructions exactly, one will not have the desired result. I volunteer at Buena Park Gurdwara, an Indian church, along with several other people who cook every Sunday and Wednesday. My duties include cooking and cleaning for around 600 people. In the kitchen I carefully follow recipes that are given to me. I have more than 200 hours of service. I have also worked at a beauty salon, a job that required that I work with chemicals, such as acetone and hair dye. Thanks to this extra experience working with chemicals at the salon, I have learned how chemicals enter the human anatomy, such as through hair and nails. I’ve gained a vast amount of experience from my extracurricular work at the salon, and I feel truly prepared for the next level. So far, my educational, employment and volunteer experiences will all greatly help me to become an exceptional chemist. Studying Chemistry has helped me to focus on my goal and to determine the correct path to becoming a successful dermatologist. Choosing the United States as the country in which I will follow my academic career has opened new doors in my life.
