I’m sure a lot of you, myself included, are a little nervous about giving our first speech tonight. Have any of you ever been so nervous that maybe you get a little shaky? Or maybe you get a little sweaty? Well some people experience this feeling on a day-to-day basis. There are some individuals that start sweating profusely in awkward or nervous situations, which, as you can imagine, can make the situation way more uncomfortable. These individuals can also start sweating for no reason at all. Most people that experience this do not realize that they may actually have something called hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition in which a person sweats excessively and unpredictably. In this speech I will tell you about hyperhidrosis as well as a few treatment options for this condition. Sweating is the body’s way of cooling itself down. So basically, people who suffer from hyperhidrosis have overactive sweat glands. The excess sweating can occur on any parts of the body. The most commonly affected areas are the underarms, hands, and feet. According to the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, hyperhidrosis is believed to be caused by an abnormal and hyperactive central nervous system response. Although there is no official cause or cure for hyperhidrosis, there are some treatment options available to help keep the excess sweating under control. One of the most common treatment options are antiperspirants. There are over-the-counter and prescription antiperspirants. The most common prescription antiperspirant is Drysol. While it is a safe option, many people begin to build a tolerance for Drysol making it less effective with prolonged use. Another option is iontopherisis.
