What is the Importance of one's name in 'The Crucible'
A person's 'name' is equivalent to their reputation and how everybody knew them. Having a good name had become especially important in the town of Salem. During to the witchcraft trials, the mentioning of ones name in court could easily end a person's life. Many of the characters within Salem are concerned with the perception of their name. People that had their name 'blackened' were more likely to be accused. Proctor is an exception because for him it's not just his reputation which is involved, its also his legacy to his children. He wants to leave his good name behind to protect his family and not let their children grow up thinking his father is a liar.
John Proctor is a good man throughout the whole play except for his one secret, his affair with Abigail, and his crime of adultery. This affair happened before the the play but it lead for Abigail being jealous of his wife, Elizabeth, which sets the entire witch accusation in action.
Once the trials begin, Proctor realizes that he can stop Abigail’s lies in Salem but only if he confesses to his adultery. Such a confession would ruin his good name and he could be easily accused of witchcraft. “Oh, Francis, I wish you had some evil in you that you know me! A man will not cast away his good name. You surely know that”. This quote is trying to emphasize that Proctor sacrifices his reputation in order to save his wife and stop the court proceedings. He stops lying to himself and admits that lust is not such a simple matter. Another important quote is, “Because it speaks deceit, and I am honest! But I'll plead no more! I see now your spirit twists around the single error of my life, and I will never tear it free! This shows that Proctor wants to be trusted, and he believes in himself.
