“WHY IS THE INITIAL CONSULTATION SO IMPORTANT”? WHAT FACTORS WILL AN ETHICAL THERAPIST COVER AT THIS TIME? Introduction The initial consultation is important because it is where the clients concerns are addressed. This time is also used to discuss any problems, phobias, fears or misconceptions that may arise from hypnotherapy. This is also the time to start building a connection with the client by asking questions and answering any they may have. It is at this initial meeting that you can start to look at modalities and induction styles. During this period you must speak about payment and the cost of the treatment. As a therapist I believe that you should always respect the beliefs of your client. A therapist should have a professional awareness of diversity and purposely not permit or condone the feeling for a client’s religion, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, age, disability, politics or social standing that would adversely affect a client’s treatment (Code of Ethics, The National Hypnotherapy Society member’s…show more content…
You can assess their modality, and work out what description you can use in the script. Check whether they are on any medication that may affect the progress, anything that might affect their self esteem, their motivation and their confidence. This is the time to start to build a good, respectful relationship between the client and the therapist which will provide a strong foundation for success. The ambience created by the therapist is also important; there are many ways to create the right atmosphere. The client needs to feel safe, relaxed, confident, and undisturbed. Without the initial consultation the therapist will have to take the word of the client, that the concerns that they have are the only ones, and that there are no underlying issues that need to be addressed.
