Impact of Modern Cell Phones Jose Escarsega Information Literacy 260 National University Usha Viswanathan June 2, 2013 Abstract According to the Wall Street Journal, 47.8 million iPhones were sold in the first three months after it went on sale in 2012 and on a daily basis, an average of 531,111 were sold between October 1 – December 12, 2012. (Fitzgerald, Sherr 2012) This shows a great consumer demand for the iPhones. Cell Phones have evolved over the last ten years into smart phones. They are basically more than just a basic phone, used to make a phone call. The modern cell phone is multifunctional with great mobility that allows an individual to communicate with anyone around the world. People want the instant access at any time and any location, to phone calls, emails, text messages and internet. With cell phone use, there is an instant gratification that leads to unforeseen problems with ethics and relationships. There are various issues that have manifested from modern cell phone use, which have had negative ramifications on public safety. (Lusted 2011) The use of modern cell phones has made a negative impact on society, which can be understood through the reduced face-to-face communication and lack of privacy that can lead to cyber bullying. The use of cell phones has had a negative impact on face-to-face communication. People are attracted to the instant access to their friends, through texting and social networks. Some people become so obsessed with cell phone use that it starts to affect their personal lives. For instance, the constant act of checking emails and text messages can consume a person's life and interfere with normal daily activities.
