Understand how to establish an effective team 1.1 Explain the benefits of effective working relationships in developing and maintaining the team Effective working relationships could be described as coworkers in a team cooperating and working together in a productive way to achieve a common goal; however some problems can affect this, obstructing a team’s performance. Ones such problem is a clash of personalities within a team. Some people may just not get on or be on the same wave length causing underlying tensions. Office politics or people trying to use their position within a team or organisation to benefit themselves, disadvantage others or gain a competitive edge can also be a real problem to effective tem working as there will be mistrust, suspicion resentment etc. All of these can lead to teams having members in direct conflict with one another, meaning that they do not focus on the work that needs to be done, and spend more time on problems being encountered, creating a negative atmosphere for everyone at work. It can affect the team’s ability to make decisions or see all options, which can seriously affect a team’s performance. It is therefore very important that certain values such as mutual trust, cooperation, respect, open communication, and the ability to face and overcome problems or difference of opinions together are supported and encouraged to overcome such problems. If people working together have mutual trust and respect for one another, it is going to make people happier to work with one another and create team spirit. People can feel confident in expressing their own opinion and views about matters without fear of ridicule or sarcasm. If trust and respect are lacking, people will not wish to express their views which in turn will hinder creativity and progress and create bad feeling amongst coworkers. Trying to then be in
