Discuss characteristics that describe self-actualisers. Maslow discusses a number of specific characteristics that describe self-actualisers: Supremely healthy people display an efficient perception of reality. They perceive the world objectively and they see things as it as it is. Self-actualisers are accurate judges of others and can quickly detect fakery and dishonesty. Self-actualisers experience a general acceptance of nature, others and themselves. They embrace their weaknesses and imperfections, and they do not feel shame or guilt as a result of their shortcomings. Since they are so accepting of their nature, they do not have to falsify themselves. There is no defensiveness about them and they do not hide behind masks or social roles. They are equally tolerant of the shortcomings of the whole human species. However, Maslow noted, that in some cases self-actualisers feel guilt, shame, worry or regret about some aspects of their behaviour, particularly about discrepancies between their nature at the moment and whatever expectations they believe they are expected to fulfil. In all aspects of life, self-actualisers behave in open and direct ways; they possess characteristics of spontaneity, simplicity and naturalness. Their lives are devoid of pretence and they are able to display their emotions honestly. These people behave naturally in accordance with their nature. However, self-actualisers are also thoughtful and considerate of others. In situations where the expression of natural and honest feelings might hurt others, or where the issue is trivial, they temporarily curb those feelings. The
