Hofer 1 Derick Hofer Professor Davis English 70 June 19, 2011 Human Reactions What would happen if aliens took over the Earth? How would people react to their invasion? One man tries to answer this by writing Arthur C. Clarke's novel, Childhood’s End, a science fiction account of aliens taking over Earth. He portrays three human reactions to the invasion. Anger toward the aliens, ignoring the aliens, and rebelling against the aliens are the three human reactions the author portrays. Each one is significant but each is different from the other. The first reaction is anger toward the aliens. In a perfect utopia there wouldn’t be anything to live for if everything is handed to you on a silver platter. “There is nothing left to struggle for” (George 115) was said by one character in the book. There would be “too many distractions and entertainments” (George 115) to actually live for, which is why people are rebelling. These remarks show that people don’t want to live in a perfect utopia but they want to live in a world that they can feel alive in and actually do something with their lives. This is why their rebellion is kept a secret because if the Overlords were to find out what they were doing, then those people would be dead. What would it be like if aliens took over Earth? How would people react to them taking over? How would you react to this news? In Arthur C. Clarke's novel, Childhood’s End, Arthur tries to answer these questions. He plays out human reactions to the aliens, or Overlords, that just took over and have plans for Earth. Some reactions are what you expect from the humans but some are unexpected.
