They Can Do It! You can help! Introduction In 1978 Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank collaborated to build the world’s foremost leader in the Do It Yourself Industry. The company was originally designed with thoughts of great customer service and a motto of “Whatever it takes” (www.homedepot.com, 2011). Today Home Depot is a global company that recruits and retains some of the greatest business minds of our generation. Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank always believed that employees who were skilled, trained, quality people would provide for competitive advantage. Employees were in the position to interact with the customer everyday and therefore required a sizable investment. Home Depot’s leadership made that investment from the beginning and has always believed in that philosophy. Organizational Talent Discuss how the leadership at Home Depot intended to use its organizational talent to gain a competitive advantage in the Do It Yourself industry. Home Depot’s leadership has a unique obstacle on its hands in trying to find a competitive advantage through the use of the talent they already posses. There are a number of distinct ways Home Depot could effectively gain this competitive advantage in the Do It Yourself industry. One of the methods Home Depot intends to use is rapid transformation. Home Depot believes that rapid transformation will keep them one step ahead of the competition and induce consistent cycles. The consistent change and adaption of Home Depot’s leadership gives them a competitive advantage if they are able to stay ahead of the competition’s own desires to change. This method can be difficult and involves a balance of strategic human resources with company policies and procedures.
