Checkpoint: Recruitment Methods HRM/240 Checkpoint: Recruitment Methods Recruiting methods for the position of transportation dispatcher: 1. Internal – Sometimes there are drivers who want to come in off the road because they are aging or having physicals problems with all the time on the road and the handling of luggage. When in need of dispatchers, this is a great place to look. People who have spent a lot of time on the road certainly know their geography as well as a strong ability to memorize fares and calculate charges. The only down side is they soon begin to resent the pay cut. 2. External – Online sources such as Craig’s list or Monster do bring in a lot of resumes and give access to a large pool of different kinds of people and experienced professionals. The downside is that most of these people have a preconceived notion of what they want to be paid and how much stress they want to deal with in a given day. Rarely do people from these sources stay and length of time. 3. External – Newspapers are a pretty helpful tool for finding dispatcher’s. You can control what area you are posting the ad in so you have a basic idea of the applicant’s socio-economic background. Also people who hunt the paper every day really need to start work immediately. The only down side is that the person is an unknown and transportation companies have very significant personalities. It isn’t always a good fit. 4. External – Job Fairs allow the ability to talk to a potential applicant and get a feel for them before they even have a real interview. Also they do give a pretty good selection of people. The only problem is coming up with finding a colorful plan to get people to come over you when you are surrounded by booths doing all kinds of interesting
