How to Present a US Flag to Next of Kin (Student Choice -Demonstration Speech) PLAN General Purpose: To inform and demonstrate two proper procedures in presenting a flag to the next of kin. Specific Purpose: At the end of my speech, the audience should know the two steps involved in the proper procedure of presenting the flag to the deceased service member's next of kin. Central Idea: To present a flag to the deceased service member's family, there are two steps- how to move towards the next of kin, and how to represent the flag. I. INTRODUCTION A. Attention Grabber & Introduction statement: Our national flag, the epitome of our democracy, we all fly it with pride. It symbolizes so many great aspects of our freedom, but yet nothing more symbolic than how it represents the ultimate sacrifice paid by our men and women in uniform. The flag reminds us of the rights, privileges, and freedoms we so dearly enjoy today. Lest we forget our service members for they paid the final costs. Remember them for "Freedom is not free." B. Thesis Statement: Presentation of the flat to the service member's next of kin is fairly simple, but yet requires attention to detail and must be carried out with precision, dignity, and respect. There are two procedures involved: (1) moving towards the next of kin, and (2) presenting the flag with a final hand salute and departing the area. C. The required and related references can be found in the United States Army flag regulation AR 840-10 dated 01 November 1998. This reference has been used as guidance to the flag.
