Introduction: 1- By a show of hands, how many people have played volleyball before? How many people have seen your 6th ranked Lady Seminoles in action? 2- While most of you have been to a volleyball game at least once in your life, you may not have been completely sure of what rules we had to follow, the calls the referees were making, or the reason for “that girl over there” being in a different colored jersey. Rules- As hard as it is to believe, volleyball is not as easy as it may seem. Because of this, there are many ball handling errors, foot faults, and rotational errors that take place. When any of these calls are made, a point is rewarded to the opposing team. An example of a ball handling error is called a double. This is called by the referee when the second or third ball is consecutively contacted two times by the same person. Another example of a ball handling error is called a lift or carry. This is a judgment call so some referees may allow a little more leeway than others. According to the FIVB Rules of the Game, the ball is a carry if it does not rebound from contact.
