Text used: The Stranger by Albert Camus Albert Camus, an accomplished French-Algerian author, best illustrates the colonial Algerian society in his novel The Stranger. This is portrayed to the reader through Camus’ first person narrative which follows the French-Algerian protagonist, Meursault. The physical setting of the text is the capital of the North African French colony, Algeria, which was captured to create a colony for French settlers. As Algeria became a republic of France, the French ruled the new nation under the French governing system. However, injustice was a significant issue as the French saw the Algerians and Arabs as second class citizens. In summary, “the relationship between Algeria and France, French and Algerians, was a racist, colonial one, based on violence”.1 This oppression towards Algerians is best shown through Meursault’s internal monologue and the unjust verdict served upon him by the French magistrate. Throughout Part One of the text, Camus portrays Meursault with a lack of ambition and a disregard of the future. This is symbolic of the Algerian nation in the 1940s as the people were uncertain of their future since their way of living was dictated by the French. The key elements in the text that illustrate Meursault’s lack of foresight and his passive relationship with Marie, and his disregard of any judicial consequences after murdering the Arab. This is significant to the reader as it symbolizes Meursault’s simple disregard future as it is unfairly decided by the French judicial system. During the court case, it is clear that the French have superior control and treat the Algerians and Arabs with injustice.
