Terrorism and Criminal Justice written assignment 1 11 February 2010 Terrorism in today’s society is a huge issue. It is constantly on the news and American and many people in society are worried about a terrorist attack against them on a regular basis. All over the world terrorism has a different meaning; there is no consensus throughout the world as what terrorism really means and what it is. In my essay I will discuss how and why the definition of terrorism is important and how and why it changed in the 20th century. There have been many events that caused the meaning and definition of terrorism to change. Different attacks have caused the way we look at the word and how acts have caused it to change. Without a proper definition society can’t even know if an act was a terrorist act or not. Terrorism is considered a criminal act and the law in the United States defines terrorism as “violent acts or acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of criminal laws of the United States or of any state… appear to be intended – to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or to affect the conduct of a government…” (Skoll M.T. pg.115) This law is very vague as most laws are and is not the same terrorism definition as a country in Europe. There is no agreement throughout the world on what terrorism is and therefore there is no international law against it. In the Meanings of Terrorism this issue is discussed “There is no international law against terrorism, because there is no international consensus on its meaning.
