03/25/2012 Question: How does it happen that normal soap is healthier than antibiotic soap? Introduction In the modern society, many people do not notice that antibiotic soap can cause sickness and they still use it due to its popularity and accessibility. However, many people who read scientific articles and know about the weaknesses of antibiotic soap do not know the mechanisms behind its action. In America, two-thirds of the people are critical towards the antibiotic products prohibition. Moreover, ¾ of American consumers use antibacterial soap. (Cleaning Institute, 2011) Therefore, it is important to bring awareness to the society and prevent its harmful outcomes to human beings. Bob Dunn’s “Scientists Discover That Antimicrobial Wipes and Soaps May Be Making You (and Society) Sick” argued that the antimicrobial soaps and wipes could make people sick when compared with normal soaps, which is healthier to use. This is because normal soap would not cause resistant bacteria in our body. The idea was based on an experiment led by Dr.Allison. (Dunn, 2011) The experiment suggested that normal soap can prevent gastrointestinal or respiratory illness but antibiotic soaps cannot. Therefore, the purpose of using antibiotic soap is to prevent illness, but now it seems not to work very well. Furthermore, in 1998, Dr. Stuart Levy issued in the Nature magazine that overuse of antibiotic soap that contains triclosan could improve drug resistance to bacteria and create a new type of bacteria that can resist triclosan. (Levy, 1998) Moreover, scientist Judith Groch in her research “Antibacterial Soap No Better And May Worse Than Plain Soap” argued that, “although triclosan can kill bacteria at high concentrations, it could not kill germ-negative bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Serratia marcescens.” In addition, antibacterial soaps cannot prevent some
