Probably the most significant impact caused by World War II in advancing Civil Right for Blacks was revealing the horrors that could be caused if racism ‘went on too far’ because this sudden realisation caused many White Americans to begin opposing all racism at all circumstances. Revealing that Hitler exterminated over six million Jews due to their race caused many people to think twice about their racist attitudes. World War II also gave Blacks more self esteem and confidence. Black soldiers were appalled to know they were fighting a racist opponent yet being treated as second hand citizens and receiving prejudice treatment back home, so the ‘Double V’ campaign was launched to gain victory against overseas
Muckrakers where created to uncover the truth and change our lifestyle. The Chicago Defender was started for the black communities, under the Muckraker style. Every time there was a lynching, the paper would put up a banner to show the world (History class 6/24/10). One of our country worst racial riots was in Illinois killing African Americans and destroying their homes. Within a few weeks into the war, people didn’t show sympathy.
Martin Luther King Jr. Assassinated Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man. He inspired many people. He didn’t get what color you were he loved all. He spoke out for justice to African Americans, for an end to racial discrimination, and against the laws that embodied it and the many subtle and unconscious behaviors and assumptions that were supported by those laws. Racial discrimination in the United States had resulted in many unnecessary and unjust deaths, and the despair and hopelessness of generations.
There was more de jure change then there was de facto change. President Truman helped change the lives of black people within the US. Truman was president from 1945 to 1953, just after the war so got involved in civil rights because he was moved the the racial attacks that veterans were still receiving. Truman established the “To secure these rights” report in 1947 which highlighted that their equal rights were not equal at all and segregation was a huge problem. Knowing this, Truman tried to do as much as he could to help such as desegregating the armed forces, the acts of fair employment in the civil service and the fair deal programme which included building houses in urban areas.
Dissatisfied with this, black people has boycotted, which are 75% of the consumer of the bus company. With the advantage of media and radio, black Americans, mainly workers al started boycott and walked to work instead. After months and months, the public transport system finally integrated marked a big success for the movement. This contributed to the cause of the movement because it has brought black community to fight together. It also involved NACCP – the organization which later played a very important part the success of the movement.
They were the first ethnic groups to feel the cuts being made to save money and ensure that the whites had the best standard of living. Segregation became legal with the slogan ‘Separate but Equal’ which allowed segregation as long as both groups had access to the same facilities. The blacks fought for equality and saw the beginning of WW2 as a way of gaining the same respect and standard of living as the whites. This however, was not the case as there was segregation within soldiers and not recognition for the blacks after the war. One of the ways in which African Americans were treated as second class citizens before 1940, was in politics.
A historical figure that has had an influence on me is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The reason why I chose Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is because he did a lot of great things for this world like leading the Montgomery Bus Boycott in Alabama to protest about racism. By him being brave enough to do something that big touched many people lives including mine. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. makes me feel like I can accomplish anything in life that gets thrown at me. Every time that I am in a bad situation or think that I can’t do something I just think about what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did for himself and all of those innocent people.
The NAACP and SCLC welcomed black and white members arguing that the cooperation between the two would make the movement stronger. However the more radical groups felts that black people should work alone. Furthermore, groups in America during this period such as; SNCC and CORE, were both protest groups which aimed at improving working and living conditions for black people, and to make them equal to other races in the USA. These had been quite moderate organisations which were linked to Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement. This was the first time that black organisations had really tried to improve conditions in the cities.
Many people in cities not experiencing racism began to question the nation's Jim Crow laws and the treatment of African American citizens. This resulted in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 authorizing the federal government to enforce desegregation of public accommodations and outlawing discrimination in publicly owned facilities. This also led to Martin Luther King receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for 1964. From late 1965 through 1967, King expanded his Civil Rights Movement into other larger American cities, including Chicago and Los Angeles. But he encountered more criticism and public challenges from young black-power leaders.
