Why was the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed? The civil rights act was passed after a long battle. The idea of the 1964 act was already in place during Kennedy’s presidency. Johnson wanted to run for the presidency in 1964, he didn’t want to do anything that would offend the black or the liberal vote. As far as Johnsons voting record while in congress on civil rights, he shared similar attitudes with the south towards civil rights for black people.
Firstly, his character traits including his oratory skills, his Nobel Peace Prize and his famous I Have A Dream speech were instrumental in his success as the face of the Civil Rights campaign. His oratory skills was the key component that got Martin Luther King famous, when he moved to Montgomery it was this skill that got him to the top so quickly. These made him a successful leader because it allowed him to motivationally communicate with his fellow African American followers. An example of great motivation in his speech would be his ‘I Have a Dream Speech’ at the March on Washington in 1963, this was his most famous speech, he spoke to at least 250,000 supporters and motivated them completely and got the civil rights act that followed was a true reminder of his skill. However his leadership skills were strained when it came to the Birmingham, Alabama protest that was a huge disappointment.
With faith black people will have courage to face the uncertainties and give us strength to continue on our journey for true autonomy. Love, peace, and a sense of brotherhood are the essential tools to developing a united nation. Another characteristic of President Lincoln’s leadership style was that he displayed good moral character. He was honest, fair, sincere and trust worthy. Those who worked under him knew that they could trust President Lincoln because he was consistently fair and was fair and decent both when congratulating and disciplining his subordinates. Another leadership quality that Lincoln possessed that leaders should incorporate into their practices is to set goals and be result-oriented. Members of UNIA had to pledge themselves to do everything humanly possible to preserve the rights of their race and to respect the right of all mankind. Where every Marcus Garvey went he had a following that wanted to hear what he had to say and find out what the next movement of the UNIA were. The UNIA was so well known that their lessons and speeches would continue even after the ceased to exist. The ACS’s plan of colonization was rejected, emphatically and early, by black leaders at the time. The black leaders believed that because they had been born in America considered themselves American as well because their fathers had fought and shed blood for American freedom and felt no connection to Africa. Henry Clay, a longtime supporter of colonization and a member of the ACS is quoted as saying; “There is a moral fitness in the idea of returning to Africa her children, whose ancestors have been torn from her by the ruthless hand of fraud and violence. As “elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), he was often seen as a rival to the NAACP. (Royson)” Martin Luther later became part of the NAACP. It was an organization that would help colored people earn their civil rights. His protests were anti-violent, because he believed there was no win through a physical war. The only way to win was with the help of God, because he created man as equal.
Standing up for what is right and fighting to achieve your goals. To me those are all great things that makes the greatest leader of the country. Sometimes being a good leader means that you have to sacrifice family and friends and the ability to not be afraid of the unknown. Being honest as a leader makes a lot of difference. It makes citizens want to trust you , it makes them want to trust the promises that you've made as a president or leader, or even a mayor.
It was reverend Martin Luther King and other great people like him in history, people with a desire for justice and equality, that eventually brought equality or at least reasonable equality in comparison to the inequalities that once existed in the United States of America. It is absolutely astounding that today the USA has a black president, this is a wonderful testament to those that sacrificed so much to see those of cultural and ethnic minority recognised as equal. It is not so much the battle for equality that is going to be examined in this essay however, a different view is going to be looked at, as every story has two sides it is important to look at the other side from time to time. This is not meant as from a point of pity, but more from a point of view that we can understand what happened and how it was allowed to develop into the complete degradation of a people based solely on their race and the exploitation of these people to the benefit of the few. In this essay we are going to summarise why the wealthy and powerful white Americans, those few that made so much from the oppression of the African Americans, required such in equality and why it was worth fighting for?
