Gateway also provides a Career and Transfer Center with services available to all students; therefore, the transition into a four-year college is smooth and virtually stress-free. Transferrable credits are a leading factor on why I chose to attend Gateway. I am associated with a local elementary school librarian who was a former student here. She has recommended Gateway Community and Technical College and discussed my concerns about having been out of school for over ten years by the time I decided to attend college. Her suggestion was to attend Gateway to obtain a two-year degree.
Education: In Minnesota, there are a lot of opportunities when it comes to education compare to Liberia. Education in Minnesota from Kindergarten to 12th grade is paid for by the government. Whereas education in Liberia is paid for by ones family. If it is not paid for, your child is send home till his or her tuition is paid or an acceptable arrangement is agreed upon. One education similarity between Minnesota and Liberia is that they both have the same amount of grade levels.
As DLC is a recognised education provider with enhanced learning credits it has made it easier and cheaper for me by using my credits. I have chosen to do access to social work because it’s a rewarding career path. As a qualified social worker you would earn a respectable salary. At the moment it’s fair to say I am earning a good amount of money, however I don’t enjoy the work anymore. Studying social work at university you are provided with a student bursary that is non-repayable.
It is harder to procrastinate while taking classes on-campus because you begin the homework in class (most times) and have the teacher to notice if you did or did not submit your assignments. When taking online or on-campus classes, you are always given a syllabus to outline your coursework for the length of each class. Regardless of how you take your classes, the teachers will want you to demonstrate your knowledge of the classroom subject by completing the given assignments. Either way you take classes, online or on-campus, you can still earn your degree or certificate at the end of your program.
I have learned to graciously take advantage of the academic assistance Auburn University offers. Supplemental Instruction, SI, has become a Heaven-sent for my history grade. Having a graduate student, who has previously taken and aced the class, review with you is more than helpful. Study Partners is also a resource that I plan on taking full advantage of. Being a college student on a budget has taught me to take advantage of anything free, one of these things being the services Auburn University offers.
I see my friends getting good jobs and pursuing their education and I was a sixteen year old mother with nothing to look forward to. My life have change so much and my goal was to go back to school and complete my education. For the past three years my mother and brothers always encouraged me to continue where I left off. Finally one day I decided to reapply to a secondary school to complete in education. I try looking for a job first to take care of my daughter and pay for my finances but that wasn’t successful.
Looking at the facts, it’s no surprise why. Cheaper, quicker, and highly vocational, two-year schools offer students the chance to start their careers sooner and with less (or no) debt. You can also use a two-year school as a launching point to start earning your bachelor’s degree. Since most two-year colleges are designed for commuters, students are responsible for finding their own housing and get to avoid the high costs of room and board. Two-year students get a huge break on tuition as well.
Extra-curricular activities are a good way for students to get even more involved with school, and usually give students a positive reputation. Most students are given study periods at school and if they are used wisely it is a resource
It is a prerequisite to what I want to do with my life. I always wanted to be a music teacher, preferably middle school students. I know that without a diploma from an accredited college, I will not be able to get into a decent graduate school and I won't be able to get any form of a decent job other than something in a cubicle and that's not where I see my life going in 10 years. Studies show that students that attend college immediately after college find more secure jobs than those that delay going to school (www.getdegrees.com). As someone looking at a job in a field that is ever changing with the economy, knowing that a college degree that I earn 4 short years after graduation from high school, it is very enticing.
