Breanne Gray Characterization Paper October 24th, 2013 Period 9 A True Gentleman “He had announced in the schoolyard that day before that Scout Finch’s daddy defended n-words,” Cecil Jacobs (Lee 74). In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch plays the role of the protagonist who fights through Maycomb’s thick racism. Finch demonstrates a very strong sense of justice and teaches his children the same. No matter what the situation is he maintains his integrity. His character is so sterling in nature that he could have been boring or irritating if Harper Lee had not written him so beautifully and believably.
He is the one who introduces the concept of phoniness. It starts with Holden telling the readers that he was yet again being kicked out of another school, this time for failing four out of his five courses. Holden could easily pass, but he refuses to do the work. Pencey is a good school, but Holden can only focus on the phoniness of the school and the students. Pencey’s ad says that they have been “Molding boys into splendid, clear-thinking young men” (2).
Summary – Holes Holes, written by Louis Sachar, is a book about a poor boy who is sent to Camp Green Lake for punishment for a crime that he did not do. The camp turns out not to be a place in the middle of the desert where boys have to dig holes to help a mean warden find a treasure that she believes is buried there. The main character, Stanley Yelnats, is a poor and fat boy in middle school who finds a pair of sneakers that belong to a famous baseball player and is accused of stealing them. Stanley has the same name as his father who is an inventor trying to find a way to recycle tennis shoes, his grandfather and his great-grandfather. Other characters are the boys in Stanley’s work group at the camp, the warden at the camp and her men, Mr. Sir and Mr. Pendanski.
He goes on to explain the wildness of the boys at the boarding school. All the things that they did in order to experience their time at the school with complete freedom. He described a student participating in what is called “fire-writing.” The disciplinary action taken against the boys that took part in the “fire-writing” was quite unusual. The headmaster of the boarding school decided to take the boys left hand and place it in boiling water for about 10 seconds. Although, after a few had took their turns, the fire under the pot was turned off, so not to burn every guilty boy.
Holes Louis Sacher Holes Louis Sacher The book ‘Holes’ is a great book about a boy names Stanley and the way, he is wrongly sent to Camp Green Lake, at Camp Green Lake, he will be built, not just physically but mentally. It was definitely a different lifestyle to what someone like Stanley was used to. The setting for him was gruelling, and unattractive, whilst the other boys got on with it. He has been kicked out of school several times; it seems like he does not care about it; however, he has a decent grade in English class. What makes Holden act this way? There is always a reason behind the way people behave, and Holden seems to have some serious problem going on within him. When Holden was sleeping over Mr. Antolini’s house, Holden revealed something that could be key to understand why he conducts himself to others the way he
All young children need a father figure, especially boys. Fathers can teach allot about how to become a “tough lad” and how to behave when you are with others boys on your own age. These are critical life lessons, which might could had helped Charlie from not ending in the situation he is in. His relationship to his mother however, that is a whole other story: He feels a passionate demonstrative love for her boisterous presence His love for his mother could have made Charlie a little bit weak and “girly” so to speak. She has probably been very anxious about Charlie growing up, and maybe been a bit to overprotective.
Todd’s parents think that he should become a lawyer and they do not give him a lot of attentions as they send him the same desk set each year. Their new English teacher, Mr. Keating or “The Captain”, is different from the rest and some of the students find him mad. In their first class, he brings them to see pictures of some of the former students at the school. Through poems he tells them to seize the day, Carpe Diem, a term which he thinks the students should live by. Mr. Keating’s way of teaching brings out the uniqueness of the pupils, but the other teachers, bound by traditions and discipline, do not like his way of teaching.
