Tupac Shakur and His Influence on Crime Tiffany N. Shatto Louisiana State University Shreveport Sociology 320 Fall 2012 November 28, 2012 Cathy Scott, an award winning journalist goes behind the scenes to give readers an inside look at the September 6, 1996 shooting of the internationally famous rapper Tupac Shakur, in her book The Killing of Tupac Shakur. Tupac was a self proclaimed outlaw whose lyrics have been considered counterproductive and influences the violent lifestyle and survival ethic amongst Black youth and young adults. Observational learning by children and adolescents does not only limit itself to the home environment and surrounding community, but also extends to media and social icons. Rap music has grown at a staggering rate over the past thirty years and has greatly influenced social and cultural norms. The violent and often degrading lyrics of gangster rap have now become main-stream and is highly romanticized by young black and white youths, alike.
. . general fan desire to invest in, know more about, and get closer to the famous killer” and involves collecting items such as serial killer art, crime scene materials, action figures of stars like Ted Bundy and even body parts of perceived victims (Jarvis, 2007, p. 326; Kass-Gergi, 2012, p. 9). The glamorization of serial killing is however fanned by a mainstream media obsessed with serial killing, and a culture intent on immortalizing societal deviants and creating celebrities. For instance, Jarvis (2007) observes that when Jeffrey Dahmer’s house of carnage was found in Milwaukee in 1991, television rights to his story were being negotiated within the hour (p. 328).
The topic that I would like to do would be murder in inner cities, specifically within the city of Philadelphia. I would like to zone in specifically on the black community and how violence, especially murder plays a huge part in their communities. I’ll be looking at mostly black males 18 years and younger. It seems that black males living in within inner cities that are at least 18 years of age or younger are participating in the most murders than any other race and gender. Some data sources that I plan on using for my research paper would be of course our class textbook, the Bureau of Justice website, and UCR reports from either online or from the class textbook.
In this paper, I will discuss the fundamental behaviors and factors of serial killers (Paul Rowles and John Wayne Gacy) that criminal profilers should be aware of in future serial killer cases. Criminal Traits According to researchers, most serial killers are typically Caucasian males, ranging between 25 to 35 years old. There are also additional predicting behaviors that may identify a potential serial killer, especially serial sex offenders. Robert Ressler, Ann Burgess, and John Douglas conducted an expansive study that involved 36 incarcerated serial killers. The focus of the study was to identify common behaviors in the childhood upbringings of the serial killers.

The amount of coverage that Matthews murder received gave a lot of people the idea that his death was of more importance than the death of others in the town. It overshadowed other stories because unlike other murders or deaths, it was motivated by one boy’s sexuality and categorized as a hate crime. It served as an eye opener not only to the people of Laramie but also to the people of the country because discrimination against homosexuals was in some ways a social norm ( and still is), but because someone had actually been murdered because they were homosexual, this was considered by most to be downright unacceptable. In today’s society when you hear that someone was shot to death, it might get a couple days, or a couple minutes of media coverage and then the story will soon fade away, but when you hear that someone was shot and the motivation of the murder was race, or sexual orientation it is often more publicized and gains more media coverage. Although the media makes it out to seem that one’s person’s life is more valuable than another’s, what it comes down to is America’s response, if the media believes that America will have a greater response to one story, that is the story that will be the focus of the media.
An example of this type of serial killer is Ted Bundy. To further classify serial killers one must delve into what drives or motivates that serial killer. This can be broken into four main groups that include the visionary serial killer, the mission serial killer, the hedonistic serial killer, and finally, the power/control serial killer.
Serial killings aren’t a new trend. Serial killings can date back to as far as 1798 with the Harpe brothers Micajah and Wiley, whom terrorized the back woods of Kentucky and Tennessee (Tru Tv Crime Library). During the course of the time while being in the serial killers class there have been numerous serial killers discussed, but only a few actually stood out, such as: Ted Bundy, Ed-Gain, John Wayne Gacy and Gary Ridgway. The question that still ponders is, “What Makes a Serial Killer?” Some killings could have been said to be because of a brain abnormality, an abusive childhood, or is the child insane, defined by legal definition? Every individual brain is made up of the same components to make it function.
