Part I 1. HISTORY OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT 1.1 INTER-CONNECTIONS BETWEEN METHODOLOGIES, APPROACHES AND TECHNIQUES IN ORDER TO DEVELOP A SUCCESSFUL INFORMATION SYSTEM, THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS SHOULD BE CAREFULLY MANAGED. THEREFORE, BEFORE THE INTRODUCTION OF THE SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT LIFE CYCLE (SDLC), THERE WEREN’T ANY FORMALIZED WAYS OF DEVELOPING AN INFORMATION SYSTEM. THE SITUATION PRIOR TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT LIFE CYCLE IN EARLY 1960S CAN BE DESCRIBED AS FOLLOWS; - basic data processing tasks - batch processing, unsophisticated technology - operational level, individual applications - implementation by programmers - maintenance / change problems - poor documentation - lack of standards, quality control The reasons which led towards the evolution of information systems development can be stated as follows; - The need for analysis and design activities and personnel in the development of information systems - The need for more integrated information systems rather than piecemeal, one-off solutions - The desirability of an accepted, standardized approach to development Thus, the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) started to appear as a consensus for centralized construction of software in the mid-1980s. (Word press, 2011) SDLC can be described as a widely used framework for organizing and managing the work. It encompasses of a number of phases which should be completed by the project team as they gradually shift from the start to the end. Figure 1.1.1: Phases of the System Development Life Cycle Each project phase consists of a specific set of tasks or steps which should be followed by the development team, and it usually results in a completed deliverable. However, the phases will differ from project to project based on its nature. There can be many variations
