The game was created at the Young Men's Christian Association Training School in the United States when he was working as a physical education teacher. Basketball was created as an indoor sports activity for students to have something to play when they couldn’t go outdoors to play other sports like football and soccer. Basketball was formed when Naismith was faced with the problem of finding in 14 days of indoor game to provide "athletic distraction" for the students. Naismith introduced the game at the request of his superior, Dr. Luther H. Gulick, he organized a vigorous recreation suitable for indoor winter play. The objective of the game was to throw the soccer ball, into the fruit baskets nailed to the lower railing of the gym balcony. Every time a point was scored, the game was halted so the janitor could bring out a ladder and retrieve the ball. Later, the bottoms of the fruit baskets were removed. The Game quickly spread grew within a few years; as most of the YMCA centers in the Northern Eastern United States, and Southern Canada had facilities to accommodate players. A number of U.S. colleges adopted the game between about 1893 and 1895. The First competitive basketball was played by the Trenton YMCA and the Brooklyn YMCA on November 7, 1896 in Trenton New Jersey. Between the years 1897-1898, teams of five became standard.
