I will first provide an overview of the issue in relation to both these fields of nursing and discuss why it is important and the impact it has on nursing care. I will then highlight any similarities and/or differences that may rise between the two fields. Adult nurses provide a high standard of essential personal care with dignity and compassion, while also being able to undertake complex interventions and use specialist skills, such as communication-the basic skill needed to survive as a nurse. Philippa Sully (2003) stated that “development of effective working relationships underpins all aspects of nursing practice. Whether we are exploring the best way to arrange shift cover or discuss with patients and their families the most appropriate community care, how we communicate depends on our professional relationships with all those involved.” In other words, communication is a key aspect in nursing as a whole.
Nurses can also build partnerships with doctors and collaborate with health care workers, to help improve the health care system in the United States. The IOM sees the nurse as a great leader, but they are not being used to their full potential due to challenges like policy regulation, high turnover of nurses, the aging workforce and the difficulty to find a job coming out of school. The ANA in a press release, agreed with the IOM report and acknowledged the need for nurses to step up and meet the challenges of the changing and advancements in the health care system, (McNamara, 2010). IOM Recommendations The Institute of Medicine report recommended that leaders in nursing should work together to help improve the number of nurses with a BSN degrees from 50 percent to 80 percent by the year 2020.
(AONE, 2010) Leadership is not just managing but facilitating. For example a nurse can facilitate the safe discharge of a CHF patient by collaborating with the dietician, the physical therapist, the pharmacist, and the home health nurse. The nurse can pull together the resources to provide education on diet, exercise, and fluid and medication management. This example not only demonstrates a nurse’s core knowledge base but her ability to be patient and family centered. Integrating the contributions of all team members helps to facilitate the patient journey.
Nurses educate and assist patients to achieve their competency in caring for themselves. Orem’s theory emphasizes the patient’s self-care needs. These needs are biological, psychological, developmental, and/or social. Thus, the goal of nursing through Orem’s theory is to increase the patient’s ability to independently meet these needs. The common problems that I deal with are musculoskeletal injuries from accidents resulting in fractures, and various forms of arthritis resulting in joint replacement surgeries.
This is where she used her knowledge of cleanliness that stared and paved the future of nursing. Her concepts are still use today and will continue to evolve and shape the role of nurse and patient care. The student nurse will reflect on health promotion issues as this stood out to me in several areas, The student nurse discovered that although we can nurse a patient back to health it is so important to make the patient aware of how necessary it is for them to participate in their care by adhering to what is recommended to them by various members of the Multidisciplinary Team and the devastating consequences that the patient can encounter if advice is ignored. The student nurse will use the Gibbs (1988) reflective cycle, this encouraged thinking systematically about all phases of an activity. Gibbs (1988) is descriptive with regards to feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusions and action plans, therefore ideal for this assignment. Although I experienced many different aspects of care regarding health promotions this assignment will concentrate mainly on a single event that will stay with me throughout my nursing career. According to Scottish Government (2010) Healthcare Quality Strategy for NHS Scotland, nurse’s carers and people at the heart of the healthcare and care delivery services should improve conditions in NHS Scotland and the care provided, on reading this strategy I understand a nurses responsibility, but the importance of patient participation in their own care is invaluable and the cooperation and communication with the Multidisciplinary Team is essential to complete patient care package to the highest standard.
Nurses have a great opportunity to shape the future of the nursing practice through therapeutic communication Armold&Boggs, (2011). While nursing is fundamentally about communicating care and care is at the heart of the nurse client relationship, many problems still remain in the clinical area due to a lack of effective communication. This is supported by Crawford,( 1998).Communication is a key skill of modern nursing practice. Therapeutic Communication is one of the most valuable tools that nurses have to build good interpersonal relationship or trust. I felt the need to develop therapeutic relationship with the patients so that they could feel they could put their trust in me ,also that I was there to listen and talk to them not just care for them.Cutcliff and Mckenna (2005) states that you can gain comfort from drawing on your interpersonal skills, having strength and endurance, feeling self confident , having sufficient competence,beingpeace and ease with oneself and also having a sense of being valued and useful.
Introduction Nursing concept is a board spectrum in nursing. As we explore the use core concept of theories we found it provides a perspective from which to define nursing. Nursing theory provides the direction and knowledge for nurse to use in their daily practice. If it wasn’t for theory we would not be able to provide the quality of care and safety factors associated with care for our patients. The safety of our patients is our number one priority when giving medical care.
The Provision of Culturally Safe Nursing Throughout this report the following topics will be discussed. Some of the personal factors affecting communication and nursing care including cultural, religious, ethnic and diversity amongst patients and nurses. In this section important factors in the health care system that could cause problems for patients and their families whilst receiving care from hospitals or other services will be discussed. In conclusion details of some of the implications that culturally safe nursing approach may have on the nursing practice will be covered. Other examples include what is acceptable behaviour for each patient.
Knowledge is consider as one of the most important values towards this profession is to ensure that under different situations nurses can act in a right manner along with providing relevant measures. All three values, which includes personal, spiritual and cultural plays an important role towards my nursing practice. My values keep me motivated to achieve the positive results in the right manner (Armstrong, 2009). Values play an important role in nursing profession because values are beliefs that nurses have when attending a sick person. When attending a sick person, values helps to take care of the well being of the patient including any actions they require to achieve the best results.
