This assignment willexplore the role of the Health visitor and how the Health Visitor works collaboratively with a chosen charity of choice. The author’scharitable organisation of choiceis HOMESTART.
Firstly the author will explore the role of the health visitor and discuss how collaborative working takes place within the health visiting role.
There is much debate concerning the role of the Health visitor and the role within public health. Over the last decade the role has altered somewhat. Caraher and Mcnab (1997) suggest that because of its main focus on home visiting and concentrating on women and children rather than health needs across the whole population, health visiting has never really been a part of public health. Luker, Orr and McHugh (2012) suggested that Health visiting has shifted away from a preventative role and had to focus more on child protection and safeguarding children issues, rather than delivering a broad range of health visiting services, focusing more on visiting families in crisis.
However having examined number of reports including Baldwin (2012) and other various literature it may suggested that many aspects of the health visiting role overlap with a number of other professional job roles working within the public health field, this includes social services, education, housing and nursing both medical and mental health. Practice nurses are hugely involved in health promotion and preventative work which is suggested by Williams and Sibbald (1999) to have caused some anxiety among health visitors as to their professional identity.

According to the Healthy Child Programme (HCP) (DOH 2009) one of the lead roles for the health visitor is to ensure that the different professionals contributing within the HCP communicate effectively and provide co-ordinated and holistic care tailored to the needs of the family. This
