It is also important to recognise that the concept of health is relative. A person’s view of what is ‘normal’ health is influenced by factors such as their gender, social class, ethnicity or age (Haralambos M, Heald R, O’ Gorman J and Smith F, 1996). The social model of health suggest that indivual and community health results from structural and cultural influences affecting ethnic minorities, women, the elderly and other particular groups of people. This relative view of health focuses on the barriers and difficulties which prevent the ‘ill’ or ‘disabled’ from having access to health and ‘normality’, as this interpretation of ‘health’ takes into consideration the wider social pressures of
P3 In this assignment I will be looking at different social groups. I will be explaining how the health of each of the social groups in each category may differ from the rest of the population. The categories I will be discussing are ethnicity, gender, locality, age and social class. Ethnicity: It is highly difficult to study the link between health and illness for ethnicity as it differs greatly across the various groups. According to the statistics presented there are different groups who have different needs.
Successful communication is vital in the health care field to guarantee efficient patient care. The exchange of ideas and approach is not only restricted to verbal communication; however nonverbal communication is frequently more significant and more momentous than audible phrases. For that reason, communication is such an intricate practice with unlimited opportunities for distributing or receiving erroneous communication. Frequently, flaw communication can result in misperceptions and misunderstandings (Northouse & Northouse, 1998). There are various key factors and focuses incorporating the characterizations of health care communication; one such focus is the relevancy of valuable personal health care communication with other professionals, consumers, and patients.
Health Disparities and Cultural Competence Margarone Momplaisir University of Texas at Pan American Professional Issues in Nursing Practice NURS 6209 Dr. Debra Otto Dr. Pam Sullivan April 26, 2011 Introduction Cultural competence has become a relevant issue in providing quality care within the health care system. Since the United States’ population is comprised of diverse racial and cultural backgrounds, cultural competence has become even more significant. Beliefs and approaches to health differ greatly from culture to culture because culture tends to shape the way we think, act, interact with others, but most importantly the way we respond to illnesses. These differences can serve as an immense resource for those who want to learn or explore how cultural differences can help to influence healthcare outcome. At the same time, this can pose enormous challenges to the healthcare provider who is called upon to deliver culturally competent care.

These differences have resulted in some gaps in medical service. Quality The Department of Veterans Affairs has been recognized as a leader in improving the quality of health care, including pioneering work in the implementation of technologies and systems to improve the delivery of care. VA leadership has also been recognized for the establishment of a quality measurement program that holds regional managers accountable for processes in preventive care and in the management of common chronic conditions. The Department of Defense also has undertaken major quality improvement initiatives. However, there have been some difficulties in sharing information between the two departments in part because the two Departments have differing interpretations of federal privacy provisions governing the sharing of individually identifiable health data.
A numerous amount of injustices have resulted from racial discrimination, specifically in the medical field and with African-American patients. In many cases, racial inequality has played a role in the way African-American patients have been treated by doctors. Thus, I believe that a person’s racial background does indeed affect the way they are medically treated because people in the medical field are still accustomed to accepting certain ideals about race which may even result in illegal experimentation and unfair treatment of people.
People may be of the same age, but differ in the mental and physical abilities. In the past I have cared for patients with same diagnosis, but respond to treatment differently. Some older or even younger adults may have weaker immune systems. As a result some patients may be discharged home earlier than others. The quality of care that a patient receives has
Core 1 – Health priorities in Australia – ‘Groups experiencing health inequalities’ For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples: 1) Describe the nature and extent of the health inequalities experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Health inequity occurs when individuals or communities experience relatively high levels of a disease, or other health issue, due to circumstances which are quite often beyond their control. For example, some groups have shorter life expectancies, poor access to health services, higher levels of avoidable risk factors and/or reduced ability to make healthy lifestyle choices. Inequities refer to situations or actions that lack fairness or justice. Inequities refer to social or economic differences between people or groups.
Health care professionals must share the responsibility of providing good quality health care to all patients. Many health outcomes are another important area of healthcare. Although more negative outcomes exist several are linked to demographics. Certain communities all over the nation are middle to low income people that do not have total access to affordable health care. The most intriguing part is people of color experience higher occurrence levels than whites for many major health
