There has been much research about how health affects the quality of life. The 21st century has seen an increase in health consciousness with individuals seeking ways to improve their well being through practicing healthier lifestyles. Personal experience and health trauma predicates this researcher to approach the issue of well being and health with a particular bias. I am particularly interested in exploring and locating empirical on how thrombosis (blood clots) affects one’s quality of life. In light of this, the following research question becomes relevant: What are the effects of thrombosis on an individual’s quality of life? This researcher takes the view that a thrombosis ailment can be successfully managed to improve the wellbeing of an individual. Consequently, this research has assumed the following hypothesis statement: Thrombosis does not have to negatively affect an individual’s quality of life. This section of the research will seek to do two things. Firstly, the research will try to identify literature on how “quality of life” is explored and the ways in which it can and has been measured with the social sciences. Secondly, it will explore the extant literature around the research question to locate the extent and range of the scholarly thinking on how thrombosis impacts a sufferer’s quality of life to find out what if any sociologically framed studies exist on this issue. In so doing, this literature review will be able to map any glaring gaps in the literature that is pertinent to the research question. Dan Brock (1993) studied the notion of “quality of life” and how that can be measured in health care and medical ethics. Brock contends that the term quality of life in health studies is often times restricted to health related conditions of the patient and does not feed into what he sees are the broader aspects that concerns “quality of life”.
