Motivational Methods Adrienne Jackson September 11, 2011 HCS/325 Professor Susan Greenwood There is no one thing that motivates people to perform certain actions because people are different and they are not motivated by the same things (www.ehow.com). Employee motivation is the level of energy, commitment, and creativity that an employee applies to his or her job performance. In the ever increasingly competitive health care industry, finding ways to motivate employees and staff can be an exhausting task and pressing concern for health care managers and administrators. Communication does not only mean a manager talking to his or her employees, but also listening to their concerns and problems. For a manager, it is important to ensure their understanding of company objectives and their individual job roles, but it is equally important to show them the importance of their feedback to the achievement of targets and standards (www.careers-help.co.uk). Communication in the workplace is vital because effective motivation can’t take place without it. A manager needs to communicate with their staff on a regular basis, conduct weekly team meetings, discuss issues, and deal with grievances to remove communication hurdles. Effective communication allows employees to offer feedback and to provide creative ideas to help enhance and change business practices, policies, and procedures. There is no one way to motivate employees; each individual employee has to make the choice to figure out what motivates him or her. To be a successful manager or supervisor, you have to understand that you can’t teach your employee’s to be motivated, but you have to create an environment that encourages and promotes employee motivation. Managers must use positive motivational techniques consistently and timely in order for them to be effective. The most effective employees are those that feel valued and supported, but also feel that they are progressing and developing through the completion of challenging tasks (www.careers-help.couk).
